Places to Visit on Kefalonia

Listed below are some of the places worth a visit on this beautiful Island

myrtos beach kefalonia Myrtos Beach

Probably one of the most photographed beaches in Greece. This beautiful beach with its with its rugged backdrop of high cliffs and fantastic turquoise blue sea and golden sands is definitely a must see while visiting Kefalonia. The beach was used in the film Captain Corelli's Mandolins the scene where they explode the mine.

There is a long winding road down to the beach which is well made. Sunbeds are available for a small fee.
Beware though the currents can be strong and do not sit to near to the cliffs due to potential rock falls.

Melissani Cave KefaloniaMelissani Cave

A visit to this outstanding cave is must while visiting Kefalonia. Melissani is situated just outside Sami. It is an underground cave in the shape of a B. Part of the roof has collapsed centuries ago allowing sunlight to filter through, when the sun is at its highest it is a wondrous site that makes the cave look to be lit by a blue light. You can as our photo shows have a boat trip round the lake. The water in the lake is a mixture of fresh water and seawater and believed to come from Swallow Holes near Argostoli

Myth says that the cave was named after the nymph Melissanthi committed suicide because her love was not reciprocated by the God Pan.

Drogarati Cave KefaloniaDrogarati Cave

Another outstanding cave is Drogarati where stalactites and stalagmites are in abundance. It is situated about 4km south of Sami quite close to Melissani, so both can be visited together.
The cave is about 150 million years old and was only discovered after an earthquake about 300 years ago. Despite constant earthquakes in its history the roof stalactites are still awesome to see. The cave has excellent acoustics and is used for cultural events.
On a very hot day the cave is a good escape as the temperature is constant 18C.
